Chinese Mochi (Muah Chee)

‘Muah Chee’ are chewy and springy glutinous rice snack coated with sesame seeds or peanuts. If you have not tasted it before, ‘Muah Chee’ is very similar to Japanese mochi. Both are made using glutinous rice flour. These glutinous rice balls snack are one of the many amazing street food found here in Penang, Malaysia. People usually have it as a snack during the afternoon.

Ingredients

  • Dough
  • 2 cups glutinous rice flour (250g)

  • 3 tbsp sugar (40g)

  • 1½ cups water (360ml)

  • Topping
  • ½ cup dry roasted peanuts (80g)

  • 3 tbsp sugar (40g)

Directions

  • In a large bowl, combine glutinous rice flour and sugar.
  • Gradually add water.
  • Stir until a smooth batter forms.
  • Pour batter into pan or plate, and place in Panasonic cubie oven in medium steam setting for 35mins.
  • In the meantime, chop peanuts until fine or can get a ready made peanut chunk.
  • Mix with sugar and set aside.
  • When dough is ready, remove and allow it to cool. Scoop sticky dough with an oiled teaspoon and drop into peanuts and sugar mixture.
  • Coat well and serve immediately.
